Depends which version you have. Some early versions stripped the high-order bit from user input (and thus the ñ would turn into something else).

More recent versions don't, as far as I know.

Alter Aeon intentionally translates all exotic characters like that down to 7 bit ascii, and destroys characters without a translation. No two clients are going to display it properly, and you'll get complaints no matter which setup you choose. By smashing it out, at least everyone will see the same information.
