I can connect to MUDs but I would like to do it from behind a proxy. However, nearly every proxy I find is either very laggy or doesn't connect at all. Anyone have a suggestion on where I can find reliable proxies?

Hard to say, never used one myself. Some you have to pay for, might be more reliable if you paid. Try a google search for "public proxy" or something like that.
