| The TCP address can be just the hostname of the world. For example, the hostname of the Trek-themed Among The Stars game is
ats.trekmush.org 1701
so you could just type that in the "TCP address" box and type 1701 in the Port box
I think calling it the TCP address is a holdover from when most MU*s out there lacked a hostname and you had to use the for-numbers-separated-by-periods TCP/IP address, such as
209.145.148.22 1701
You don't have to pay for MUSHclient in order to play on a game, but the initial registration screen will pop up every time until you do.
Payment instructions and amounts can be found at http://www.mushclient.com/fee.htm. The price at the time of this writing is between $20 and $30 depending on HOW you place your order (secure credit card versus check-by-mail, etcetera)
It's well worth it, and since I bought my copy, all upgrades have been free and I've been able to suggest a great many features that actually made it into the program.

The simplest method is to use the Quick Connect feature (first item on the Connection menu).
Just fill in three fields ...
- The "name" of the MUD (can be anything - just to help you find it next time)
- The "address" of the MUD
- The port number.
Here is an example ...

| It may still be a good idea to find out what the actually numbers for the address are, since on rare occation something can go wrong with the lookup used to retrieve them. When this happens the mud will still be up, working and accessable, but since the client has to 'ask' for the numbers it needs, it won't be able to find the mud. Often the easiest way to get the numbers is to pop open a dos window and type 'tracert themudname.org'.
For instance on the one I play typing 'tracert agesofdespair.org' gives me this:
Traceing route to agesofdespair.org [130.243.43.23]
followed by a list of other places that stuff you send to the mud will travel through to get there.
You would simply place the numbers between the [] into the box for the TCP/IP address instead. This won't solve a problem with the internet, which would show up in the trace as a mess of * * * or even a message 'Destination Host Unreachable'. But it does get around the rare, but annoying problem of having the DNS server, that keeps track of website names, refusing to tell mushclient where to find the mud. ;) | Top |

| You can also find out the address, once you have connected to a MUD, by opening the Info configuration window (Shift+Ctrl+I). The top line is "TCP/IP address of this world".
You can note that for later use.
The only problem with doing that is sometimes a world will change IP addresses, but keep the name the same. That is why names were invented in the first place.
Thus, use the actual numeric address as a last resort. |
