| Hello. So I was recently introduced to all this by my friend, and I have been attempting to connect to a particular site. However, every time, the connection is refused. I have tried every possible thing I can think of, including port forwarding, bypassing the router, etc etc... During testing, I pinged the website to see if I could even do that, and it turns out I cannot. I am all out of ideas, and so I turn here for help. Another thing I have considered as well, is that I may not be able to connect because I am currently in China. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem before, where they could not connect because for some reason or another, that country doesn't allow you to. Thanks in advance. | Top |

| It probably is. My own MUD website is blocked by China.
What is the site? I can test it at http://www.greatfirewallofchina.org/ for you. |

| There are open proxy servers that you can use to connect through. I'm sure quite a few of them have been blocked by whichever country is blocking the original site, and some muds even block anyone connecting through an open proxy site. However, if you can find one that will work for you, you should just need to change a few proxy settings, and you can mud away. |

| Much the same remarks can apply to anyone in a restricted environment, for example a college or workplace.
Port forwarding won't be relevant because that affects incoming calls (for example, if you were running your own MUD).
Doing a "ping" isn't conclusive either - some adminstrators disable pings, but enable other connections (because of things like the "ping of death"). Others may enable pings but disable other things (like connecting to certain ports).
It is possible they (whoever "they" is) have disabled certain sites - that could be indicated by being unable to connect to their web page, unable to ping them, in fact unable to reach them at all.
It is also possible they disable certain ports - this could be indicated by being able to reach their web page, but not connect to their MUD. Trying the MudConnector mud site check could be useful, to see if the MUD is actually up.
Conceivably you might get a response by contacting your local ISP. The blocks that are possibly in place may well be put in further "up the line" of the routers. The local ISP administrator may well be as frustrated as you, and be able to provide a list of places you can, and cannot, reach. |

| Yeah, I think it is probably China. Contacting the ISP is a no go since its a Chinese ISP, my Chinese isn't good enough for technobabble, and their English is just awful... oh well. Guess I will have to wait till I get back to the states. Thanks for the help anyways! By the way, this is the site I was attempting to connect to.

| I posted in another topic, but it is also relevant here...
Look for a full anonymity socks 4 or 5 proxy server, and try connecting through it, just make sure you can access it while being in china, and you should be set for using whatever service you want.
I know for a fact that ones located in Korea, and Thailand work well for accessing sites in the US typically, as I use this method to log on multiple accounts on a mud I frequent.
