Then, since you're game is hosted elsewhere anyway, the only thing you'd need linux for at home would be development, so dual-boot might be a very good solution for you, though you may find that, after you've gotten used to using the linux desktop for a bit, that you like linux better than windows for everything except gaming, I know that I do. :)

well as of right now i have a great custom built machine all it lacks is a nice processor but as the computer i use now it a 12 y old gateway i mean i have the first amd athlon classic socket a processor lol it looks like a sega game but it runs pretty good because i keep it in tip top shape but i run my game off of www.frostmud.com

Allow me to emphasize what Conner said: you really don't want your desktop machine to be the same one as your live server. So like he said, if you plan on self-hosting, it's very recommended to get a separate computer.

Consider that a MUD uses very little CPU/memory. You could get away with getting (or even building) a very cheap computer that would run the game. Of course, I'd personally go for something a little better just because I don't like slow compilation etc., but you certainly don't need to worry about the really expensive things like good graphics cards etc.

Particularly if this is for development and you plan to host your live mud elsewhere. If you're hosting your mud yourself, you should probably build yourself (or buy yourself) a second machine to leave on as a server running Linux anyway.

ahh i do a fair share of gaming which requirers directX so would it be bad for me to upgrade im sure once i eventually get a new cpu for this other pc i can upgrade one to linux and see how it goes while i still have xp on the custom machine

Yes, but unfortunately under the hood it's quite different for non-trivial changes. I'm of the camp that it's sometimes better to avoid superficial similarity in order to avoid giving the impression of deeper similarity.

But yes, I also believe that Linux is far superior, at least for the vast majority of my needs. I also keep Windows around, but just for gaming.

And many of the modern Linux distributions can be made to look and feel so much like Windows XP that you'd be hard pressed at times to know the difference. The only thing I find Windows still better than Linux at these days is gaming, and that's only because so many developers insist on making their games rely upon DirectX or various Windows DLLs that just don't translate well. Otherwise, I'm in the camp that David referred to who believe that Linux is far superior to Windows.

You have a Linux shell without having Linux? Not sure what you mean... do you perhaps mean remote access?

And yes, Linux is "like" Windows XP in that it is an operating system, an environment in which you operate your computer. But it is nothing like Windows in very many ways; some people will tell you it is far superior, others will tell you that it's harder to operate and therefore not worth your time. It is true that you have to be willing to learn how to get around it; it's not for the faint of heart. Still, it's not too bad, especially if you have experience with the command-line interface.
