Greetings,

I am running a Smaug server and I have been trying to customise the races a little. However I have come across some difficulty. For example I would like to turn the race Drow into Dark-Elf. Bellow are the steps that I taken

setrace Drow name Dark-Elf
setrace Dark-Elf save

Now as I understand it this should now make the Dark-Elf race appear on the race selection at that up, after a reboot. However this is not the case. Is there anymore steps that I should take such as editing the race.lst for example? I would be glad of any help you may be able to offer on this matter.

Regards, Matt

I can point you to a webpage that has instructions to the creation of new races/classes. It is written by one of the creators of SMAUG, Nivek. A coder-god you can say :P

Just go here: www.cs.utk.edu/~london/smaug/ and click on the 'How To' button. This should explain what you want to do. If not repost and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

I thank you very much for the suggesting of that web site, and very helpful it is. You see I have already found that site and that's how I got this far *smile* Still I will try describe my problems in more detail. I started taking all the half races out and making them into pure races, using the following commands.

setrace Half-Orc name Orc
setrace Orc save

Now, by editing the race.lst and removing the reference to Half-Orc and putting Orc in I got that race working. Don't know if I was meant to do this, but I have backup just in case. I did this and got all the half races changed and working. However a day later (and a trip to the pub) I remembered that I had not made Drow into Dark-Elf. So I did the same, only this time it will not work.

The web site says something about using 'setrace save' to add the race to boot up. From the context I assume it means to use it without a race name, however this just gives me a syntax error, you must insert a race name. Thus I have created a Dark-Elf race that will not load up at boot. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Greetings again,

I have fixed the problem!

I found that the problem did not lie with my method, but after some testing that it only lied with the Drow race file. You see was trying to make Drow into a Dark-Elf race. However the Drow files was not responding to any changes, let alone copying and changing is name. Therefore when I carried out the same process on the Gith race it worked as before. I think you again for your post and the link to a great site. One that I have used a great deal since I started hosting a mud (all of a week now!). Thanks again,

Matt Wall

Glade you figured it out on your own. That will help you better then me telling you what to do. Good luck on your MUD.
