Okay, I downloaded SWLFUSS and it showed a winzip icon. I opened it up and it said it was a .tar file. I unziped it and it had a winzip icon again. I checked what was in that .zip and there were a load of files. I was wondering if it was supposed to be like this cause .jar's aren't supposed to be, so i thought maybe .tar's aren't either. Anyways can someone help me open the .tar file?

A tar file is compressed in linux, and I'm not sure what would support it in Windows.

Winzip supports opening tar files, but it will not create empty directories needed by the program. You'll need to unpack it inside of the Cygwin shell to get that. Or find some other archive utility that will unpack the emtpy dirs.

Tars technically aren't compressed, they're just a bunch of files stuck into one 'archive' in the literal sense of the term. In fact 'tar' stands for 'tape archive', back in the days where you put one file onto the whole tape. My father actually wrote the original version at Berkeley, as I recall.
