smaugFUSS comes packed with intermud2. I can't, however, make "imcconnect" work, and therefore, can't do much with imc. It would be nice to be connected outside while the MUD is in its lone development atmosphere.
Does intermud/IMC even work?
The primary question is: how do I set it up? | top |

| You'll have to explain more than "it won't work". What's wrong? And yes, IMC works in FUSS. |

| Basically, I use the "imcconnect" command, and it gives me no feedback, just a line skip. And then none of the imccommands work, giving me a response along the lines of "You are not currently connected to intermud." | top |

| Well yeah, you have to set it up first. Use the imcconfig command. |

The imc2 software does not come preconfigured, there would be no real way for it to know what to configure itself as.
As Zeno said, you'll need to use the imcconfig command to setup the connection. Specifrics can be found by typing "imchelp imcconfig". Information on where to connect can be found at http://imc2.intermud.us.
If you need more specific help, you can ask again here or post to the IMC2 forum at www.muddomain.com. |

Okay, I've configured everything successfully (at least I assume) with the exception of the last two imcconfig options:
ClientPwd
ServerPwd
I'm not sure what either of these do. | top |

As Samson already pointed out, there are a couple of other sites where you can find more detailed and thus better information, but basically put anything you want in those two fields as long it they each contain both numbers & letters (ideally symbols too) because they are password fields, but they're very non-critical password fields. ..You must have them not match each other but they don't need to be guarded or anything and they don't have to match up with anything, they just have to have data in them that doesn't change. Personally I like to use
ClientPwd : wot@w@y2c0nn3ct
ServerPwd : r@nd0mp@ssw0rd
on my mud because it meets the criteria but also conveys my sentiments to anyone who ever happens to look at them. ;) |

I'm convinced IMC is farked.
Localname : Crimson Fate
Autoconnect : Disabled
MinPlayerLevel : 10
MinImmLevel : 51
Adminlevel : 63
Implevel : 65
Infoname : Crimson Fate
Infohost : server02.intermud.us
Infoport : 9000
Infoemail : xmlionheart@gmail.com
InfoWWW : Mud's webpage
InfoBase : Smaug 1.6 FUSS
InfoDetails : A custom fantasy RPI-MUD.
ServerAddr : server00.intermud.us
ServerPort : 3333
ClientPwd : yum23@monkey
ServerPwd : monkey@mymomshouse
This mud has enabled MD5 authentication.
The mud is using plain text passwords to authenticate.
That's my current IMC configuration. i've tried another serveraddr and serverport from the three listed on the link Samson gave, but it doesn't help. Can't imconnect or do an imcchanlist. Nada.

When you try to do imcconnect does anything show up in your mud's logfile? Depending on your host's firewall, you might need to have them open the port you're connecting to for outbound traffic. Otherwise, your config looked fine, though you'll benefit from toggling md5 off (just do "imcconfig md5"). This is mine, which is working fine for me:
imcconfig show
Localname : LandOfLegends
Autoconnect : Enabled
MinPlayerLevel : 6
MinImmLevel : 51
Adminlevel : 56
Implevel : 64
Infoname : Land of Legends
Infohost : tcdbbs.zapto.org
Infoport : 4000
Infoemail : conner_destron@yahoo.com
InfoWWW : http://tcdbbs.zapto.org/mud/
InfoBase : Smaug 1.6 FUSS
InfoDetails : Medieval MUD with our own twist
RouterAddr : server00.intermud.us
RouterPort : 3333
ClientPwd : wot@w@y2c0nn3ct
ServerPwd : r@nd0mp@ssw0rd
This mud has disabled MD5 authentication.
The mud is using plain text passwords to authenticate.
Though I do have to wonder which version of the imc client your mud is using since you've got ServerAddr & ServerPort instead of RouterAddr & RouterPort. |

It's not farked, your configuration is :)
The network does not deal with 2-word localnames. You need to either combine these as one, or pick something else. In either case it needs to be a single word. |

Fixed the localname issue. Didn't help.
Also, fixed the md5 thing.
I have broadband access and a software firewall, but the firewall isn't blocking it.
Here's a little log sample of a typical imcconnect:
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Connecting to server.
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Loading channels...
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Loading ban list...
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Loading ucache data...
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: imc_read_socket: Descriptor error on #5: Operation now in progress
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Shutting down network.
Thu Dec 29 13:34:34 2005 :: IMC: Connection to server was lost. | top |

| Blasted worthless error code. Anyway. I checked the logs on Server00, turns out that one got full. For some reason though some kind of recent change in the way sockets send and receive stuff causes the messages it delivers back to just fail. Which of course means you get log messages that mean nothing. Anyway. Try again, you should be able to get through now. |

Works excellently, Samson. Thanks. :)
PS - much gratitude to smaugFUSS. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it over the old SMAUG release. | top |
