When I go to start afk mud this is what I see

~/mud/src $ ./startup
'nknown option: `-
Usage: csh [ -bcdefilmnqstvVxX ] [ argument ... ].
~/mud/src $

any help on what to do is greatly appreciated

Chances are that you have straight csh but want to install "tcsh" using whatever package manager or setup utility is available to you.
