Is there any way to have the typing window automatically wrap to the next line (force a newline) after 80 characters have been typed in?

It's not that easy, as I suppose you really mean "the last space". You could probably write a small script to do that if it was required - you would hit a key when you had finished typing in the line(s) and it could reformat them for you.
