Please excuse me if this is already answered elsewhere, was unable to find it doing some searching on "install" and "plugins", but they are pretty broad searches. Also didn't see anything in the FAQ.

Is there any mechanism in place that would allow a MUD to configure a download of Mushclient with plugins for that MUD and some settings already installed?

Obviously appropriate credits and links would have to be in place - the motive is purely player convenience and not to bypass Nick's page or the MC donation button.

This is mostly aimed at players completely new to MUDs looking to get started on a real client, would like to make it as painless for them as possible.

Thanks!

There is not exactly a "mechanism" but you could achieve it a number of ways.

  • Do a "clean install" of MUSHclient into a directory.

Make a world file for your MUD with the appropriate MUD address and port number. Just leave the character name and password blank. Change any other settings you think are relevant.

Install whatever plugins you thought were appropriate and put them in the plugins directory if not there already.

Then zip up the resulting directory, upload that to your site, and suggest that players download it, unzip it, and use that. I don't think the MUSHclient installer does a heap that will be missed.

The only problem will be that as new versions of MUSHclient are released your custom version will become out of date. That probably isn't a huge worry and you could probably re-make the zip file every 12 months or so.

  • Alternatively, just make the world file, and the plugins, zip them up, and suggest that your players install MUSHclient, and then install your zip file "over the top" or some such thing, to add the extras you supply.

You could probably even make the zip file be installable anywhere, providing you get the path name to the plugins right (eg. a relative path from where the world file is).

I am happy for you to do whatever makes it easy for your players. Some credits somewhere would be nice, but my primary focus is not on donations, but to support the player community in general.

The donate button seems to work in the sense that it brings up the Paypal donation page.

The link to Paypal is "secure" in the sense that I chose one that doesn't disclose my email address, on purpose.
