I've played on many muds, some small, some big and can Honestly say I am quite experienced.

However I've always wanted to learn how to code or how to start mud. I've read some guides but most auotmatically assume you have had some form of Experience.

So basically whats a good way to learn and start a mud? (And I mean I have absolutely NO experience. I Know nothing about coding or what programs I need but you have to learn someway right? :P)

Thanks :)

Read this: http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/bbshowpost.php?bbsubject_id=2293

1) Decide on a codebase. What are most familiar? What features are you looking for?

2) Decide on a theme. Original? Based off a series?

3) Find a host. You can use Cygwin, find a free host, a pay host, etc.

4) I would recommend learning how to code. Example: Smaug is in C, so you would learn C: http://www.cprogramming.com/

1: My favorite mud ever was written in ROM but they slowly changed it over time. However, Considering I want/new to code what might you suggest?

2:The chances of me actually making a mud is slim but if I did it would probably be based on Pre-Final Fantasy 7 just for fun :P. 4 Different pk factions 4 non-pk factions etc.

3: Is there some kind of Template people use? Rather then starting coding from scratch?

1) SmaugFUSS has a lot included with plenty of bugfixes. Can't say it has a ton of documentation though (same goes for Rom/etc).

3) Yes, that would be a codebase as mentioned in the first point.
