As regular forum visitors will know, I have done a few YouTube videos about various aspects of MUSHclient (and also one on how to do closed captioning).

These videos have closed captions already made, in English, which helps viewers who are hard of hearing. However closed captioning is also supposed to be useful if you speak different languages.

I would greatly appreciate it if forum users would volunteer to translate one or more caption files into other languages.

Users on the forum have stated they come from: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eritrea, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA, Vanuatu.

The files that need translating are here:

http://mushclient.com/files/mushclient/captions/

To translate, simply:

  1. Get one or more of those files (right-click and "save as" to get an exact copy).

  2. Open in any text editor (eg. Notepad, MUSHclient editor, Crimson Editor)

  3. Leave the timecode lines "as is" as they indicate where each caption is shown.

  4. Translate each line into your language (replacing the English) - see the next post for a suggestion about using Google translate to do a preliminary rough translation.

  5. Make sure your document is in UTF-8 format (see post further down for more details about this) so that accented and other characters appear correctly.

  6. Save as the original name, appending your language.

    eg.

Save "Making a plugin caption.srt" as "Making a plugin caption_German.srt"

  7. Repeat for other files if you want.

  8. Post a message here saying you are done and I will send you a forum mail message advising you of my email address, so you can send them to me. (Or, post the translation directly here, a forum message can be up to 6,000 characters long, and the example below is under 5,000 characters).

  9. I will then upload the captions to YouTube.

An example of the captions files are:

00:00:01.26
I'm just demonstrating MUSHclient used with a whole lot of plugins

00:00:06.56
which help you to see what you are doing and gives somewhat more of a

00:00:10.63
graphic look-and-feel to it.

00:00:12.86
You can see on the screen here I've got a campaign list, which is like a quest

As you can see, you just need to replace the English text, leaving the timecode line alone. Make sure there is a blank line between each caption.

If you are planning to do this, please post a brief message below (eg. "I will translate all files into Spanish") to save having multiple people working on the same language.

If you need to use extended characters you can save the file as UTF-8 format (Notepad lets you do this) to preserve the extra characters.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

An example of translating the above into French might look like this:

00:00:01.26
Je suis juste démontrer MUSHclient utilisé avec tout un tas de plugins

00:00:06.56
qui vous aident à voir ce que vous faites et donne un peu plus d'un

00:00:10.63
graphic look-and-feel to it.

00:00:12.86
Vous pouvez voir sur l'écran d'ici J'ai une liste des campagnes, qui est comme une quête

I did that using Google translation - it may not make a heap of sense.

Actually, translating the above back into English looks OK:

00:00:01.26
I'm just showing MUSHclient used with a whole bunch of plugins

00:00:06.56
to help you see what you do and gives a little more than a

00:00:10.63
graphic look and feel to it.

00:00:12.86
You can see on the screen here I have a list of campaigns, which is like a quest

So maybe it might be quick to use Google translate (or similar) to do a preliminary translation, and then use your knowledge of the language to fix up any idiomatic errors.

As an experiment, I used Google to translate all of:

http://mushclient.com/files/mushclient/captions/Aardwolf%20miniwindows%20example%20captions.srt

That gave:

00:00:01.26
Je suis juste démontrer MUSHclient utilisé avec tout un tas de plugins

00:00:06.56
qui vous aident à voir ce que vous faites et donne un peu plus d'un

00:00:10.63
graphic look-and-feel to it.

00:00:12.86
Vous pouvez voir sur l'écran d'ici J'ai une liste des campagnes, qui est comme une quête

00:00:20.70
J'ai aussi une quête

00:00:22.53
J'ai ma carte de l'ensemble du continent

00:00:26.60
et moins ici, c'est la carte de la ville.

00:00:30.13
Cela me donne mon statut ici-bas ...

00:00:32.96

00:01:29.66
Ou, ah, si je veux voir ce que je vaux I suffit de cliquer sur la «valeur» et il me dira ce que c'est.

00:01:37.50

00:02:32.36
(plus de musique et de sons, épée)

00:02:38.76
Eh bien, qui va bien!

00:02:40.60
Let's see what else we've got ...

00:02:42.30
Tuez les calmars ...

00:02:45.86
Comme vous pouvez voir les mises à jour barre d'état pour montrer ce que je me bats ...

00:02:52.06
et comment la santé de l'ennemi qui se passe par rapport à la mienne.

00:03:04.26
(grognements plus, la musique de bataille, et de sons, épée)

00:03:07.83
Tuer quelque chose d'autre ...

00:03:17.90

00:04:17.73
Je me demande si c'est souhaitable?

00:04:19.30
Ah oui, pourquoi pas?

00:04:21.23
(yiii-Ha! / râle)

00:04:22.73
Eh bien, qui ne tiendrait pas longtemps!

00:04:23.86
Bref, c'est MUSHclient avec beaucoup de miniwindows différents, jusqu'à

00:04:31.33
Qui sont mis en œuvre en utilisant des plugins et comme vous pouvez le voir, vous donne

00:04:36.00
tout un aspect graphique Nice-and-feel "à jouer un jeu MUD.

00:04:40.66
Thank you for watching.

Translated back into English gives:

00:00:20.70
I also have a quest

00:00:22.53
I have my map of the whole continent

00:00:26.60
and less here is the map of the city.

00:00:30.13
This gives me my status here on earth ...

00:00:32.96
and if I move the mouse over the map of the city, he shows me what all the symbols mean.

00:00:37.53
On the right is the inventory window, and if I move the mouse over the window of inventory ...

00:00:42.76
Oh, maybe I'll leave the track.

00:00:45.46
Move your mouse over the window of inventory, it shows me details on individual items in my inventory.

00:00:52.00
On the right is the help window that reminds me of various things I can do.

00:00:58.00
Those in green - if I click on them, it actually does the work.

00:01:04.70
And if I click on those yellow, it just brings up aid.

00:01:09.06
Help is in its own window so I can then reading the help while I walk around

00:01:16.03
if the aid does not disappear.

00:01:18.06
I'll just close the Help window.

00:01:20.00
For example I can see using alcohol

00:01:23.76
and he tells me to drink and eat.

00:01:29.66
Or, ah, if I want to see what I am worth just click on the "value" and tell me what it is.

00:01:37.50
Now the other thing is the status bar, so I think I'll try to do some battles.

00:01:43.30
So I might run to Verum - Forests of Verum.

00:01:49.76
And as I do you'll see here on the big map of the circle shows where I am ...

00:01:54.30
and you can see it move quickly to indicate where I am on the map.

00:02:01.13
Now, if I look at the little card that I have entered the forest.

00:02:05.96
So I'll use my keypad to move a little

00:02:10.40
and it seems to have found a few mobs, so I can "consider" them.

00:02:14.06
"consider all"

00:02:16.50
He says it should be a fair fight, so I'll just try to kill the "radius".

00:02:23.10
(plays music and sounds of battle) and you hear the sound effects

00:02:27.30
which gives it a certain dramatic effect.

00:02:32.36
(more music and sounds, sword)

00:02:38.76
Well, that's good!

00:02:40.60
Let's see what else we've got ...

00:02:42.30
Kill the squid ...

00:02:45.86
As you can see the latest status bar to show what I am fighting ...

00:02:52.06
and how the health of the enemy is going compared to mine.

00:03:04.26
(more grunts, battle music, and sounds, sword)

00:03:07.83
Killing something else ...

00:03:17.90
OK, I ended up fighting them. As I move now you can see on the small map

00:03:22.73
I updated the site - I am the little symbol in the center.

00:03:27.90
And I'll go further into the jungle - it is sort-of like a minimap

00:03:33.66
and the main map does not update until I leave the region.

00:03:36.93
So if I make my way out of the forest until I get out of the box ...

00:03:42.76
Now you'll see on the big map, I walk on the continent.

00:03:51.40
I will leave the continent and see what happens ...

00:03:56.10
I am in the oceans Uncharted - I do not know if I have to stay there ...

00:04:00.53
I'm in the dark continent, others - there is another entrance to the area ...

00:04:05.06
Ah, can not go in there, it seems ...

00:04:09.73
And I have now entered the area of the prison.

00:04:12.50
So I can begin to fight against rats.

00:04:17.73
I wonder if this is desirable?

00:04:19.30
Ah yes, why not?

00:04:21.23
(yiii-Ha! / rattle)

00:04:22.73
Well, that did not take long!

00:04:23.86
In short, MUSHclient is very different miniwindows up

00:04:31.33
Who are implemented using plugins, and as you can see, gives you

00:04:36.00
an aspect graph Nice-and-feel to play a game MUD.

00:04:40.66
Thank you for watching.

Obviously the last line of the French was wrong (and it seems to skip occasional lines), but the translation looks reasonable. Any French speakers want to comment on how good the French is? (after all, any errors in the second version might be in translating back to English).

To test the translation idea out, I uploaded the French translation above for:

Playing a MUD game with MUSHclient

[EDIT] Video now moved to Vimeo.

To do this I:

  • Copied the text in English from the page:

    http://mushclient.com/files/mushclient/captions/Aardwolf%20miniwindows%20example%20captions.srt

  • Pasted into Google translate (setting the options as English -> French)

    http://translate.google.com.au/

    (i.e. - I got the above results)

  • Copied the result and pasted into a new Crimson Editor document.

  • Used the Crimson Editor "Document" menu to set "Encoding Type" to UTF-8 Encoding (with BOM).

  • Saved as Aardwolf_miniwindows_example_captions_French.srt

  • Uploaded to YouTube.

The results look OK.

The other possibility is to use the YouTube "auto translate" feature. That is in Beta status. Perhaps someone who speaks a language other than English could try that out. If it translates reasonably well, then we could just let people use that, and not worry about translating lots of files.

OTOH if the translations come out really confusingly, then a manually-translated file might be better. :-)

It wouldn't surprise me if the translations are a bit "out" for some languages (eg. German) because some sentences are split over different lines. It might be better to combine such lines into one sentence, translate, and then split back up so the captions roughly appear at the right time in the video.

I'll take a look at the French version by the weekend. Fixing up the auto-translated will probably be pretty easy, easier at least than translating from scratch.

(How many other French speakers are reading this? It might make sense to divvy up the files, if you're interested in translating, of course.)
