The compiler and "make" are pretty thoroughly debugged applications. Your problem might be caused by insufficient memory.

If you have an old PC and want to compile a MUD you might be better off installing a Unix variant, eg. Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD. I am using OpenBSD which is easy enough to install, although Linux installs pretty easily too.

Even a low-end PC (provided it is a 386 or better) should be able to run that.
