It's been awhile since i had the chance to play around with areaed but i just tried opening a stock smaug 1.4a area and it wouldn't work. In fact it will not load any stock area at all. I am using the standard no frills smaugconfig.dat and the stock smaug socials, commands, and skills.dat. I am running the registered version of areaeditor 1.31 on windows xp pro with sp1. This is the very first time i have ever had a prob like this and i have been a registered user for a few years now. UPDATE It only seems to affect version 1.31, I just tried 1.30 and it seems to be ok. I would appreciate it if you could find out just what the prob is Nick.

In the process of fixing up the bug reported for 1.31 I changed it to properly process the "layers" field in the area file. Unfortunately if the layers field isn't present at all, it gets out of whack with the area.

I suggest for now you use 1.30 to read in existing areas, and then save them. Then use 1.31 from then on. Or stick to 1.30 if you don't have a problem with the layers field. This will be fixed in the next release.

Thanks for the prompt response, since layers don't really affect me i'll just use 1.30 for now until the next version comes out.
