I have completed the character generation process in quite a few in MUD/MUSH games. One typically either has too much guidance or too little during the process, then goes on to some kind of tutorial or is left to one's own devices. The balance between speeding a new player into the game and making sure that they are prepared for the action can be a difficult one to establish.

Considering a text-based game with limited graphics, what do people think about giving a new player options about how they would like to begin?

In other words, a new player would create their character and then find themself at a nexus room which offers them the following three choices:

> No tutorial what-so-ever about game mechanics.

> An automated tutorial where the game runs the player through some basic commands with comments about them.

Use the WEAR command to wear your armor.
e.g. wear cuirass
(the game would then force the player to do so and move on to another command after a timed pause in the script)

> A role-play based tutorial where the player would follow a little story-line with notes included about the necessary commands.

I feel that these choices would allow a new player to make some decisions about their style of play and knowledge base without being forced to go through the drudgery of a tutorial.

I know that there are smarter guys than I out there like Kavir who have made a hard coded tutorial help system, but I am limited to soft code solutions for the purposes of this. None-the-less, I am grateful for any comments. Thanks in advance.
