If I login to my Win7 desktop with RDP and an open MUSHclient session, I always get the message 'Mushclient has stopped working' followed by 'Mushclient has to be closed'.

I hadn't upgraded in years, I was on 4.27. So, tonight I upgraded to 4.73 and can still reproduce this bug.

I'll be happy to try anything or give any info that might help fix this. Just let me know what's needed.

BTW, it's Win7 Pro 32bit.

Can you clarify a few things?

  • Using version 4.27, it also crashed? So upgrading itself wasn't the problem?

  • Does it work OK when not using RDP? (I haven't used RDP myself, but I gather it is a remote desktop).

  • Quote:

You mean, MUSHclient is running OK up to that point, but when you logon remotely it suddenly crashes?

I don't know how I would begin to reproduce this. Is RDP something that is generally available on Windows? Do I need two Windows 7 machines to do it? Is it something you buy? Or built-in?

RDP is included in Windows and can be accessed(in W7) by going to Control Panel, opening System, and clicking Remote Settings to enable, then to connect, going to the Start Menu and typing "Remote Destop Connection" (without quotes) in the search box. It should be the first result.

This is included in all versions of Windows 7 and comes with the OS itself.

EDIT: This does require two computers with internet access. This may be of some assistance if you're still unsure of how to use it: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/videos/remote-desktop-connection

Yes. Yes and yes? :)

Both versions crashed as soon as I logged in to remote desktop with windows 7. Both worked fine on Windows XP. Windows Remote Desktop comes free (it's a single user version of Microsoft Terminal Server) with WinXP Pro, WinVista Business and up, Windows7 Pro (which I have) and up.

Up until the time I login with a microsoft remote desktop connection, Mushclient runs perfect. I've been using it for years and never had any real problems with it until now.

As I said earlier, Remote desktop server is built in to Pro and up. I suspect this problem exists only in Vista (I haven't tested), Server 2008, and Windows 7, as Microsoft introduced a newer 'better' version of remote desktop starting with Vista and Server 2008.

The remote desktop CLIENT is freely available in all windows versions since 2000, and even some earlier versions have some downloadable clients from microsoft.

If necessary, I can provide you a temporary account for testing on a windows7 pro machine and windows server 2008 machine.

I can also provide the windows minidumps that it makes when MUSHclient crashes if they are of any use to you.

Right, well I found a Windows 7 PC with RDP on it.

Set everything up, and it didn't crash. I could start up MUSHclient, play it, whatever.

This was with version 4.73, the latest released one.

Perhaps there is something more specific to your setup, like fonts, plugins, scripts or something?

I will look at it a little deeper in both Win7 and Server 2008.

Just to be clear, it only happens when I have an already open windows session with a MUSHclient window open, and then connect to that existing windows session from another PC using Remote Desktop.

It's pretty much stock MUSHclient, I have no plugins installed and no custom fonts. Let me take a while and dig around the crash dumps to see what it is reporting and post it back here.

Come to think of it... I have one more thing to test. Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 I haven't connected from my laptop to my desktop, I've been using an Android client that resizes my desktop session, which may be doing it.

I'll test from my laptop. It may be a problem with the way RDP auto-resizes the windows or the Android client itself. I'll test from an XP machine and set the session size to various settings to see if that causes the crash.

Quite reproducible by playing with RDP size it seems. Something to do with Win7 changing from the current theme and size to the 'basic' theme and resizing everything down to 640x480 on the android RDP session.

Bigger sizes and higher-speed settings in RDP, such as keeping the current theme and using larger sizes from my laptop create no crash at all. But lowering the size and stripping out the themes and bitmap chaching and such seems to cause the crashes.

Switching screen sizes and themes probably isn't something MUSHclient is expecting to have happen to it. You are probably right this is behind it. I'll try to reproduce on the weekend. Meanwhile can you run it somehow in a way that this doesn't happen?

I'm guessing you have it running at home so you can use it while "on the road" in some way from your phone. So if, before leaving your main PC, you already resize the screen resolution down it won't have to change it, and therefore might not crash.

Or try just having it on the basic theme in the first place.
