hey, everyone. i just downloaded the windows version of smaugwiz and i am needing a new battle sequence. one that actually shows your health and the mobs health. if anyone could help me that would be great. i'm also wondering if anyone has an address of smaugwiz snippets. i've looked and haven't found much of anything. and another thing, i'm wanting to make it to where the classes will log into their own home areas. so any help would be appreciated. thanks

Ithildin

i know i know. windows probably isn't the best thing to run a mud, but when you don't have funds for a linux or just don't know how to use a linux then well..that's what your stuck with.

Do a google search for 'smaugwiz snippets' You'll get more relavent links then you'll know what to do with. A few of them even contain the snippets (and variations of) you're looking for ;-)

Also, almost all SMAUG snippets are extremely easy to port to/from SmaugWiz with a little bit of coding knowledge.

You may need to be a bit more specific in your request. This link: http://rafermand.net/infocenter/snippets.htm contains multiple versions of both battle prompts and hometown snippets, and there's no real need to switch to Smaug if you like Smaugwiz, if you know anything about programming.. and if you DON'T, you have no business running a mud IMO.

Actually Linux is free, so funds shouldn't be a big problem. Free to download that is, then you probably want to write it to a CD or two. You can buy things like Red Hat Linux CDs/kits for around the $20 mark, ready to use. In the long run you will probably find Linux much cheaper than Windows. Utilities you are used to paying for on Windows tend to be free on Linux (eg. the compiler is free on Linux, costs hundreds of dollars for Windows).

You're not going to find a distro of linux that can't be downloaded for free. Head to: http://www.distrowatch.com/top.php?1 and pick one ;-) IMO, the best way to learn something is to just start doing it. Partition your hard-drive or another computer. Install a distro and just start tinkering. Visit websites, irc channels, forums, bookstores, ect. There's a wealth of information compared to what there was even a couple years ago. If you like coding and you like computers I imagine you'd like linux and other *nix based OS's like FreeBSD or even Mac OSX

I agree you will probably find free downloads for some/all versions of Linux/OpenBSD etc., however some of them are quite large (eg. Red Hat is now 4 or 5 CDs). This means around 3 Gb of downloads, which may exceed your monthly allowance depending on how you pay your ISP. Thus you may not pay the Linux guys, but may well end up paying your service provider, and then you also need to buy 5 blank CDs, and burn them. All up, it might be cheaper and quicker to find some place that has already done that.

However if you have a fast connection (eg. cable or better), no time limits, lots of cheap blank CDs and your own burner, then it is practical to do it yourself.

There are lots of sites that will help you with Unix/Linux, one very good one is:

http://www.linuxgazette.com/

They have tips tricks, things to help beginners and so on.
