I'm currently designing a MUD with a few of my friends but I can't seem to find out how I would make variables for certain objects. For example:

if <variable> == 1
<do something>
else
<don't do something>
endif

Do you mean creation of your own variables? If so, I think you are talking about what I call mudvar's. This thread could shed some light on that:
