I've seen this question pop up a lot in the archives... most of the threads are closed (?) so I started a new one.

Does anyone have recommendations for a MUD hosting solution? Looking for inexpensive but doesn't have to be free. Needs to support SMAUG 1.4a ported to Windows

I've been doing Google searches and most sites are Linux only. is web hosting different that MUD hosting? Would something like this work? https://www.winhost.com/

thanks!

Personally I wouldn't host a MUD with Windows. For one thing, Windows is a GUI-based operating system, and you will be in once place (your home) and the server somewhere else.

You are better off with Linux hosting, as that is what SMAUG is designed for anyway.

There are lots of hosting sites around for web servers, I'm not sure what they would say to hosting a MUD game, but really it is probably less bandwidth than hosting a web site with all its photos which take up megabytes.

I'm using HostDash (link at bottom of page) - you could ask them. Their cheaper packages start at around $USD 3 a month.

is it as simple as recompiling to run on linux?

It should run when recompiled for Linux. You may want to try Windows Subsystem for Linux which lets you try running Linux on your Windows PC.

If you install that, and then attempt to recompile, you will flush out any possible problems that using a Linux server might cause.

You don't need to quote my entire response in your message. It is just above where your message is. I've edited your messages to get rid of the quotes.

Quoting is for highlighting a particular line in a message that you want to concentrate on.
