Ok... This is really strange. I got a new computer with windows ME, and I don't know if that is what causes it to mess up but, when I sign on to the mud *Sometimes* and I don't know what triggers it but I know a wrong password deffinitly does. It goes to a *Blue Screen of Death* and it says WINDOWS PROTECTION HAULT ERROR and it forces me to shutdown. Have you come up upon this before? Do you think there is something I can do in the Compiling of SMAUG to get around that?? Crazyness... That's what I think... CrAzYneSS....

Yes, I get occasional reports about that, but can never reproduce it on Win98 or Win NT.
The only thing I can suggest is using the Cygwin version, and running under gdb (the debugger) to see *where* the crash is occurring.

A couple of things to try ...
1. Make sure you have a "gods" directory at the same level as the player directory.
2. Make sure you have a "backup" directory at the same level as the player directory and inside that put subdirectories "a" through to "z".

There is another possibility. Windows ME doesn't come with 'Real Dos' mode. The *ehem* great *ehem* people at microsoft decided to take about 30 seconds off of the boot time of WinME so they got rid of it. That -might- be your problem. I myself have WinME, but I installed 'Real Dos' ode using the WinME rescue disk and some instructions i found online. (sorry, don't remember where. you might try a web search.)

I'm still having problems with this crashing thing. Everything I tried hasn't fixed it. Well... I think I'm going to be getting windows 2000 (I kinda need it anyway) does anybody who have it have any complaints about the crashing thing? Does anyone know? Any input would be great! Thanks.
I was having some problems running the windows executable on a windows 2000 platform. I ended up just downloading Cygwin, and running smaug under the bash shell. Works great now.
