do you do that?

I personally use a Yellow Dog ( redhat ) linux G3.

I guess no one can defend their beloved windoZe!
Because this site has products for Windows PCs (MUSHclient, Area Editor) the people on it will tend to use Windows.
Personally I have both Windows and OpenBSD, as each has their good and bad points.
Other things being equal I would suggest that a Unix/Linux server would be more reliable and faster, however if you have a Windows PC, then you have to use that, obviously.

I run my mud on a windoze os, and never run into any problems. Of course, it is very obvious that Linux is superior in many ways. However, thanks to Gates, there are many things that will only run on a windows os, and not on Linux. For example, the software for my tv tuner card isn't compatible with Linux, and I like to be able to sit and watch tv while my mud's running. Besides, it's hard enough teaching my admins how to code, let alone how to install/use Linux.
So yah, Linux is better, but not if you run your mud 24/7 on your personal computer, which has stuff that Linux just isn't compatible with.
OpenBSD for the live server
Windows for the test server (developing rooms making sure no zone problems etc..)
I would never use linsux again.
just get openbsd it's free and damned secure
Well Viruz, seems to me that Linux is a bit like buying a used car. At least for the time being you can't be sure it will be prefect compared to one bought from a new car dealer and your mileage will tend to vary based on where you got it and who from. lol As opposed to Windoze, which in a joke I resently read about it, is also comparing it to a car and stated 'if you painted the line on the road, you would need to buy a new car', among other things. ;) Haven't really heard much about FreeBSD, so I can't comment on what flaws it may have.

I periodically play with MUX 2.0 on my home WinXP machine. My regular MUSH is hosted on mux.net--http://www.mux.net/servers.shtml has some specs on that server.
