SMAUG server
We are pleased to provide a Win32 (32-bit Windows) port of the SMAUG server. The original (Unix) SMAUG server can be found at:
MUDs and MUSHes - what is the difference?
The other server provided on the Gammon Software Solutions site - PennMUSH - is for a MUSH.
The SMAUG server is a MUD server.
The difference is that MUSHes are generally "social" role-playing games, whereas MUDs are more combat oriented.
MUDs
- Combat oriented - you basically play to fight "monsters"
- Although you socialise with other players, "social" commands are pre-written (eg. smile, laugh and so on). You don't "pose" as you do in MUSHes.
- Building is difficult or impossible. You generally take the layout as it comes, ordinary players don't create new rooms.
MUSHes
- No built-in combat
- More role-play oriented
- Socialization by "posing" - eg. "Bob runs his fingers through his hair thoughtfully".
- Building is easy and even encouraged - ordinary players can often build their own rooms or homes.
SMAUG server
In our download area is the Win32 port of the SMAUG server. Unlike the PennMUSH server it comes with a large number of pre-defined areas and monsters, so within minutes you can have your own MUD game running and have hours of fun playing it.
It is also useful to "get the hang of" playing a MUD before connecting to a "real" one on the Internet.

Area Editor
If you are using the SMAUG server you will probably find Area Editor handy. This program is designed to facilitate editing of the "area" files used by the SMAUG and ROM MUD programs. Click on Area Editor for more details about it.
Connecting to your own PC
When running your own MUD (or MUSH) it is handy to know how to connect to your own PC, without having to dial-in to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
To do this, connect to the IP address:
127.0.0.1
otherwise known as "localhost".
By doing this you can play on your local server without incurring connection costs.
