Script troubles

So I'm trying to add a script to MUSHClient (v4.61) to add colors to an otherwise colorless MUD, and I'm running into trouble. I save the file in mushclient\scripts and open it with the client's scripting deal, click the "enable scripting" box on, change the language to lua, etc-- everything I'm supposed to do-- but when I try to run the script I keep getting this error message:

[string "Script file"]:1: unexpected symbol near '<'

And since I know next to nothing about coding or scripting, I have no idea how to fix it. The first few lines of the code are:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE muclient>
<!-- Saved on Friday, October 07, 2011, 2:32 PM -->
<!-- MuClient version 4.61 -->
<!-- Written by Nick Gammon -->
<!-- Home Page: http://www.mushclient.com/ -->
<muclient>

<!-- triggers -->

<triggers
   muclient_version="4.61"
   world_file_version="15"
   date_saved="2011-10-07 14:32:02"
  >
  <trigger
   custom_colour="17"
   enabled="y"
   ignore_case="y"
   match="* ask, *"
   sequence="100"
   other_text_colour="royalblue"

Anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks.

You save what file? Looks like you are trying to open the world file as a script file.

Try this tutorial on scripting basics:
