BSOD on Windows 8

I've just recently upgraded to windows 8 and have the latest windows updates, drivers and version of mushclient installed.

While using mushclient in win8, I find that after some time (ranges from minutes to several hours), the world output window only shows the background and does not show text from the world. This happens when I switch from another application back to mushclient or from the notepad log window to the main world window. Sometimes when I shut down mushclient, it blue screens with a kernel exception not handled error. When I do manage to shut down and restart mushclient without windows crashing, this issue persists and the only thing that fixes it is a reboot. This didn't happen on my previous win7 installation.

I've updated the drivers for the intel HD graphics 3000 graphics card , ran mushclient in windows 7 compatibility mode and performed several reinstalls to no avail. I don't experience this problem in any other applications.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem?

It should not be within the power of an application to "blue-screen" your PC. A device driver, maybe, because they have more privileged access to the system.

I don't know what would cause that, except maybe you are running out of memory. Can you check how much memory MUSHclient is using, especially after it has been running for a while? See if it is going up.

Earlier today, I figured that it was worth a shot to force mushclient to run using my NVIDIA graphics card instead of the integrated intel graphics. I thought that fixed the problem but after over 10 hours, it crashed again. I was hoping that that would fix the problem, will monitor memory usage more closely.

Another thing that I notice after restarting mushclient after these BSODs is that I think there is some corruption of data or settings going on. Some plugins I use were producing compile errors because of missing settings files and my mcl file disappeared.

Plugins should be read-only. There is something weird going on. Try a virus scan?

Yeah, something strange is definitely going on. When this occurred again just now. Mushclient showed sql writing errors. I checked task manager and mushclient was only using 60+ mb of ram and I had over 1gb of free ram, so I don't think thats the problem. I forced the process to end using task manager so it wouldn't bluescreen, deleted the folder as something probably went wrong and tried to restore from a 7zip backup I had of that folder. Strangely enough, 7zip was unable to extract the files, reporting a "not enough storage is available to process this command" error. I checked my drives and I definitely had more than enough space for the extract.

The most common solution I got from googling that error was to modify the IRPStackSize parameter by editing the registry (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285089). I'm not sure if following these instructions would even work in windows 8 or if it required a reboot to take effect but after editing the registry setting the maximum value possible, 7zip was still reporting that error. After rebooting, 7zip was able to extract the files no problem.

I'm not sure what might be causing this. I ran an antivirus scan and it gave my system a clean bill of health. I'll move the mushclient folder to a different partition to see if it happens again and do a scan of my hard drive to diagnose hardware issues.

Try installing it in a non-protected part of disk (eg. My Documents or similar).

I now realize that this is probably not a mushclient error at all but just a sign of something more serious going on. I went to my event viewer and saw application failing to write things to the hard disk/registry at about the same time as mushclient displayed sql database writing errors. I will reformat windows 8 and see if that resolves the issue.
