Replace-text triggers

I'm thinking a trigger to replace text would be useful. The trigger would allow the creation of in-line hyperlinks, partial-line matches (* <word> * could return the two wildcards unchanged, while editing the word) and could even call a script to edit and/or determine color of the text.
