Forgive me for being so blunt, but I think you have answered your own question.
Honestly, instead of running to a forum to get someone to answer your question
you are going to have learn to do a little work on your own and research the
the problem yourself. I am not trying to insult you, but all to often people seem
to just want a instant MUD without applying any effort what so ever. These people
will never learn anything, unless they start searching themselves. It is as easy
as going to www.google.com and searching for “ Smaug MUD getting started” in
addition to actually taking the time to read all the posts on this forum. Just
remember this for future reference. Now to solve your problem.

I assume that you are compiling your code with MSVC++ on a windows box?
Have you downloaded and unzipped all the support files?

Ok if the top two questions are yes, then check the paths that you have set within
MSVC++. You want to find the Debug directory for the project that you are working
On. Your .exe file should be in that directory. Move the .exe file into the Directory
C:\smaug\smaug, or where ever the main server directory is. From there you should be
able to run it.

***Tip
Here is a quick an easy way to find that file that you are looking for.
Just goto /Start/Search For Files/ change the searched directory to c:\
and search for smaug.exe. The name might very depending on what
you have named the project.

I have to reiterate the importance of learning how to solve some problems
on your own. After you have actually applied yourself to conquer the dilemma
without success, then use the Forums as last resort. This is help your problem
solving skills. HEHE, and believe me, as an Implementer you are going to
as much skill in problem solving as possible

Did you search Google for that message? I found this post ...

>> Code calls compress_bz::error() to ask *whether* an error has
>> occurred. It is silly and scare-mongering to print
>> "compress_bz::error called" to the log in this case.

I read that as "don't worry". Did it work anyway?

Just goto /Start/Search For Files/ change the searched directory to c:\ and search for smuag.exe.

Loki,

It is smaug.exe, not smuag.exe. You have transposed smaug to smuag a few times in your post. It will confuse Proto-6 even more to do that. :)

Nick,

What could you possibly be talking about?
I don't see a Smuag in my post at all.
All I see is Smaug.

j/k :P

Oh yes, there's smaag, smaeg, smaig, smaog, smaug, smeag, smeeg, smeig, smeog, smeug, smiag, smieg, smiig, smiog, smiug, smoag, smoeg, smoig, smoog, smoug, smuag, smueg, smuig, smuog and smuug <evilgrin> however we usually deal with smaug at this site. ;)

You need to change to the area directory. eg. after doing the "make" do this:

cd ../area
../src/smaug

*smile*

If in case that doesn't do it for you, you might have to
manually move the "SMAUG.exe" over to your ~/smaug/area
directory. In other words, the .exe file must be in the
area directory for it to run properly.

FYI, its looking for area.LST rather than area.1st and that particular file contains all the info your mud needs to load the areas you intend to work with. Of course, the files on the list have to be in your /area directory as well or it still won't run properly.
