I've got a friend I want to connect to my MUD I've got sitting on my home comp. In the connect log for my modem, it gives me 2 IP and 2 DNS addresses. Anyways, I gave all 4 addresses to them, and none work. They tried to connect and after a point were getting kicked off, so anyone have any idea on what is going on? I don't even see anything about someone connecting from the outside in the MUD, so any clues?

This might be a silly question but have you checked your firewall? Seems like the most immediate culprit. If the clients weren't finding the IP addresses, they'd die immediately; but if the connection is refused it might take a little longer.

If all else fails, try it without the router.

Are you behind a NAT router? You might need port forwarding. Search this forum, there have been plenty of queries along these lines.

Firewall does seem like a culprit, but I wouldn't know how to get it all fixed up. As for routers, I don't think so. I dial into a server, not into anything else that I know of

The firewall probably blocks incoming connections. You need to edit its configuration and let the MUD port through.

How? o.o I looked for firewall settings, and didn't see anything dealing with that kind of thing.

There are many, many posts here regarding firewalls and all that fun stuff. Unfortunately it's hard to help you without knowing more about your firewall and router; every one works differently.

If you connect to your routers IP via a browser, that should bring up the settings.

And like I said, you may want to remove the router and test it. If it works, you'll know for sure that it's the router. Just reconnect the router when you're done of course.

Er.. didn't he say that he has no router? He said he "dials up into a server", which sounds like dial-up to me :P

You're probably on Windows Firewall, but the procedure's pretty similar regardless. Open up your firewall properties, look for the exceptions tab, and click it.

Add port to whatever your game port is :P. Alternatively, adding smaug.exe to the exceptions list might work as well.

Yes, dial-up. No router. I'm doing this through SuSe (I hate Windows. My modem doesn't like to work with it, or vise versa.) and using the standard firewall that comes with it. I'll search to see if I cann't find something to fix it.

EDIT
Searched, and what I saw was mostly about setups with a router, which I don't have. I cann't start it using
Port number must be above 1024.
That came right from the logs from ../SmaugFUSS/log. Any other ideas? I've gone through YaST2 and the Control Center, neither of which had anything for configuring the firewall from what I've seen. I'm going to check the companies site and check the manual and see what it has to say.

EDIT #2
Lol. Ok, I'm an idiot. That said, I found the modual to configure the firewall. It has SSH allowed, and I never saw mention of telnet. So, does anyone mind giving me an idea on what I would need to open up to allow access?

You need to open up whatever port your MUD is using. I think that the SMAUG default is 4000, but you should know this since you're the one connecting to it. :-)
